Overview

How do we improve people’s quality of life and create a safe urban environment that meets the interests and needs of the residents? In 2020 I was lucky to be involved in the making of the first Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan in Russia. Developed jointly with the citizens, the plan is aimed at improving people’s quality of life by creating a safe urban environment that meets the interests and needs of the residents. This plan is based on a holistic approach, integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and contributes to the creation of a comfortable city that provides access to a high-quality urban environment.

Challenges

Creating easy-to-understand content

Making difficult concepts easy to understand by various groups of people Introducing citizens to the process of making the sustainable urban planning frameworks including the design, content and overall look of the document.

Knowing your audience

We had to address different social, occupation and age groups, so providing the right type of communication to accumulate, analyze and use the feedback from the audience was crucial.

Collaborative Design Process

Our work was a collaborative design process, incorporating input from various stakeholders: urban planners, administrative offices, business community, academic experts and local citizens. This ensured that diverse perspectives were considered, leading to more comprehensive and inclusive outcomes.

Results

We received positive feedback with the release of the first Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. Over 90% of the target audience feedback stated that it was "easy to understand", "visually pleasing", entertaining and "informative". The city of Pskov is currently actively working to create an accessible comfortable urban space, and according to the city officials, "the developed plan will help us set the vector for sustainable urban and transport development and coordinate the actions of authorities and all stakeholders, assessing the level of comprehension and engagement." The results of the project came out in a publication, map, online web and mobile questionnaire, stickers, city walls, etc.
